Hush harbors, also known as brush harbors or brush arbors, were the secret gatherings of enslaved Black people in the U.S., typically in wooded areas where they met to worship, freedom dream, and commune with ancestors away from the watchful eyes of enslavers. This ancestral legacy lives on. Today, a hush harbor can be grandma’s house, a hair salon, a porch, or a virtual book club. Any space where the act of gathering is centered.

Throughout this giclée fine print the tenderness and necessity of gathering is echoed through the assembly of archival and contemporary images, maps, and vintage postcards.
